Meteors Created Life

Scientific American is reporting on a research project showing that it was meteors hitting the oceans, not asteroids of comets from outer space as was previously thought that led to life on earth. The study, by two Japanese scientists, is based on them having replicated the impact of meteorites hitting the ocean at 1.25 miles, or two kilometers per second

Study co-author Toshimori Sekine, a researcher at the National Institute for Materials Science in Tsukuba, Japan, says he was surprised by the output from the experiment, adding that "there are many additional molecules we found but didn't analyze yet." Lead author Yoshihiro Furukawa, a PhD candidate at Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, says that in light of the results, "we can say those ocean impact events [were] very effective processes for the production of various biomolecules on the early Earth." He is quick to note, though, that it is unclear how much or how many of these biomolecules would be needed to initiate life.

But will we ever know the answer to life's origins?

"It's neat to show that you could harness the energy of impacts to create organic bonds," says Jennifer Blank, an astrobiologist at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif. But she fears that theories of life's origin may never move beyond the hypothetical. "As someone in the general field, one of the frustrations, of course, is that we're never going to know the answer," she says. "But as another mechanism for contributing to the inventory of organic compounds, this is cool."

Mallika Chopra's New Site

Mallika Chopra, daughter of Deepak, has created a great site called intent.com, with terrific content and features.

You can post there and share your intent with the community, and there are good links to other higher consciousness sites.

The Supreme Court ruling on guns brings to the fore how important, to some, guns are in our society. Even though the law allows them, only when we work toward a society when guns and munitions are not even relevant, do we move toward a healed planet.

Finding Your Bliss

That's what Jill Bolte Taylor, a Harvard neuroscientist did when she had a stroke. It closed down much of the left side of her brain and left her devoid of worries, ego and judgment. Upon her recovery, she began to talk about how to achieve nirvana, a state she now can access at will.

She spoke about this at the Technology, Education and Design (TED) conference in February.

The Man Who Started It All

The Secret, Eckhart Tolle's The New Earth, the works of Wayne Dyer, and much else on the subject of manifesting, all refer back to some of the principles Napoleon Hill talked about in Think And Grow Rich.  Hill passed on in 1970, but is still available to us courtesy of You Tube.

The Intention Experiment

I'm finally reading Lynne McTaggert's "The Intention Experiment", a book I mentioned when I first learned of it, last December.  Have you ever had an intention for something that suddenly occurred, simply because you thought it? For example, you may have thought of speaking with someone, or calling him or her, and then that person called you, seemingly out of the blue.   Or maybe you were thinking of a particular item to buy and it suddenly showed up.  Has this kind of thing ever happened to you?  Please share.

Is This The Newest Big Thing?

His The Power Of Now was a huge hit. Now, Oprah has embraced him. Does this book live up to the hype?

Deepak Chopra has a new book, The Third Jesus.

It is sure to provoke controversy among those who have conventional religious views, but will raise consciousness among those who truly want to know just what Jesus would do. Over at Liberalland, where they have been kind enough to mention Healed Planet occasionally, there is a good Chopra post.

He Changed The World And How He's Gone

He brought us Transcendantal Meditation in 1958, and his book "Science of Being and Art of Living" taught millions the way to happiness and peace. The Marharishi Mahesh Yogi mentored, among others, the Mia Farrow and the Beatles.

The Maharishi left us Tuesday evening, passing peacefully at his home in the Netherlands.

Healing Karma

That's the goal of a charity called Jalie's Butterflies is doing. They have something called the Vick House Project, where they'd like to raise enough money to buy Michael Vick's House and turn it into a shelter for abused and mistreated dogs. Talk about doing all one can to take a heinous situation and doing all one can to reverse course. Healed Planet hopes they succeed, but even if they don't monies raised go to the ASPCA.

Britney Spears, Maria Bartiromo, Ashley Tisdale, Jessica Alba

Given what we know about the Law of Attraction, what is it that has these particular individuals drawing such attention, both wanted and unwanted? And is this something they can control? If so, wouldn't that mean we can control what and who it is we each attract?

Do We Really Have A Say In Our Future?

Or is destiny beyond the reach of human influence? In watching the presidential race, it first seemed inevitable that Hillary was going to be presdient. Now there is an air of destiny surrounding Barack Obama. Is our future sealed by the destiny of certain individuals, having nothing to do with stances on positions, or even the voting process? Can we have any effect on outcomes of events such as electons? Let's not forget that even though Al Gore won the popular vote, he did not become president because other forces were at play. Is our future pre-ordained, then, and how can the future be changed?

Can Thoughts Change Your Life And Change The World?

If you believe in The Power Of Intention the answer is yes. Lynne McTaggart's forthcoming book looks to the science behind The Secret, showing how the power of thoughts can change us and change the world.

Immigrants Are People Too

Even if they are here without documentation. I don't like the term "illegal immigrant." How can a person be illegal for existing?  The New York Times editorializes today, showing that the Republicans are trying to out-Dobbs each other, while Democrats, at least, have a better starting point on this issue. Some good questions are asked:
What should be the role of immigrant labor in our economy? How does the country maximize its benefits and lessen its ill effects? Once the border is fortified, what happens to the 12 million illegal immigrants already here? Should they be expelled or allowed to assimilate? How? What about the companies that hire them?

A truly healed planet doesn't get hung up on borders, but does get hung up on what the must humane way is of dealing with human beings. Most human beings want what we all want, peace in our time, opportunity, and the best for their families. How about starting from that vantage point?

How Do You Heal A Planet When One Country Aches?

And did our policies lead to this tragedy? We're the ones who are trying to cram democracy down the throats of countries not ready for it. Can that be true democracy?
And we're the ones who plotted the return of Bhutto to a country not ready for her.
And we're the ones who supported Musharraf for as long as it suited our interests, as Juan Cole points out.
How do we heal the planet now?

Will Smith Sees Good In Everyone

Even Hitler. And now the Jewish Defense League wants to boycott his movie, "I Am Legend." But wasn't Smith just using an extreme example to say that there is good in everyone, and that the most evil person may think he or she is not evil at all because of perverse, twisted thinking? And does the most evil, twisted human being have a shred of goodness that we should strive to recognize?

Orgasms For Peace

Imagine a third of the world having orgasms at the same moment. That hoped-for occurance would be at the moment of the winter solstace at 1:08AM,Saturday December 22, 2007. Global Orgasm For Peace knows that human consciousness can be measured to have a global effect on matter and energy during widely-watched events. The Global Consciousness Project at Princeton University has studied this using a network of random event generators, examining whether human thought has an effect on world events. If you do participate, let us know how it goes.
